CD Package for Hail Social

Early in 2007, i was asked to design a CD package for this Philadelphia-based band. Having just arrived back from the UK (with everything still in boxes), it was the first thing i've done in a while without the benefit of a scanner, pen, paper, or anything that existed outside of the laptop (including web access). Was like the Dark Ages.

Buy it, you might like it!

Sticker Set - Urban Outfitters Direct

A sheet of 80 stickers made to seal "thank you" notes from our customer service center. We had a lot of fun with this one.

I art directed and designed / Mike Perry, Damien Correll, and Dan Keenan also designed.

Gift Set package labels - Urban Outfitters

On a limited budget and ridiculous deadline, we cranked out these large stickers to fold around generic white boxes. The boxes were themed product assortments to be sold as gifts during the Holiday 2005 season.

I art directed, designed, and wrote the copy.

Kick In The Teeth

A deck design done as self-promotion while Design Director at Monsoon. Finally found a use for the dentist's slides i had pulled from a dumpster some years prior. For real.

Early Fall 2005 Catalog - Urban Outfitters

A big fat book, shot on a train between LA and SF, in Montreal, and points inbetween, by some of the most talented people i've ever had the privilege to work with. This book was an ambitious attempt to reduce the amount of "flat" off-figure photography, and to ramp up the storytelling. An exhausting creative victory, a bitch for the budget, and yet the positive impact on the brand continues to pay us back today. It reminds everyone that Catalog success needs to be measured in metrics that transcend comp sales figures. For a company that does no other advertising, it's critical to get the image right.

I provided conceptual and creative direction / National Forest art directed it / Angela Boatwright shot it / Christine Baker styled it / Corrine Vegter did hair and makeup.

Gomod

Identity, stationery suite and maximalist website design for a vintage furniture lifestyle portal. Got a shout out on K10K for this one.

I art directed and designed it / Barry Bryant coded the website. He also owns Gomod.

Gift Catalog Thumbnails

Done in our initial Brainstorming meeting. I usually pull these out well after the book has printed, to see how close it came to the original idea.

Origami Oracle

Same characters mentioned earlier, applied to one of those origami question-asking thingys. A direct mail promo for my old office.

I designed, illustrated, and cut it out.

Oldies 98.1 WOGL

The radio industry is a strange dinosaur, but thanks to a few enlightened and super nice individuals who decided to risk being contemporary, we were asked to perform a total rebranding and design for Philly's oldies radio station, beginning a 3 -year odyssey of total design. Logo, stationery suite, tons of collateral, artwork for a scary templated website (not my design), billboards, bus campaigns, a slot machine, wraps for mustangs, pt cruisers, a chevy tahoe, and city buses. Sometimes the client makes all the difference in how much you enjoy your work.

I art directed and designed it / business card layout and "dancers" illustration by Ed Brogna.

Old Fashioned Candy

I've posted a few of these candy-related illustrations here and there. They were produced as part of a gift set concept we had at Urban Outfitters, but I like to see them on their own.

Urban Gift Certificate and Urban Pound

A few years back, I worked in the UO Retail Art Dept, with an incredible team (Kevin Lyons, Jeremy Dean, Andy Beach, Ed Brogna, Erin Mulcahy, Nicole Michels). Ed and I collaborated on this one (he did the Gift Cert). The project was published in the Type Director's Club Annual that year.

Logos

There were more. I'll post as I dig them out of the pile.

ID and Stationery Suite - Monsoon

My first task after accepting the Design Director role at this branding agency was to dump the existing identity and start over. This was the first of many reinventions over two years.

Holiday Location Card / Sticker Set - Urban Outfitters

Every season, we design a Store Locations card that's given away at the cashwrap are of the stores. Rather than waste paper on information only, we try to add an additional use for each piece. This time it was a kisscut sticker set.

Kevin Lyons art directed it / I designed it and did some of the illustrations.

Chocobar Type

Interesting fragment from a much larger package label project. Always amazes me how little pieces can get lost in the iterative process. It's good to dig back through the paper pile now and then, so you don't forget you had some good ideas.

Business Card - Emily Selvin

Business card for a stained glass artist / restorer. Printed two-color on translucent vellum. Kind of a one-liner, but in this case it presents well.

More character design - Urban Outfitters

Pretty much self explanatory. Cute characters in search of an application. I wound up using these on a promotional piece. I'll upload the finished images shortly.

I designed and illustrated.
